Welcome to Social 6! This year your child will be working on a double period schedule to allow for more in-depth learning in the classroom. Because of this, social studies generally falls on a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday schedule. This page will be updated at least a week in advance with information/assignments. If your child is absent, please be sure to check out what they missed on that particular day. The course outline for the year is attached below for parent viewing.

Tuesday: Students will be given their Unit 1: Canadian Democracy (Part A) student booklets. We will be looking at democracy and how to make decisions in a group. The booklet is attached below and will be where all notes are kept. It is very important that your child does not lose this book so they can study for exams. We will also be looking at the 3 ways to make a decision (consensus, voting, representatives).
Thursday: Today students will put their decision making skills to work by completing a survival scenario group assignment. They will be given the double period to complete it, but it will be DUE on Friday, Sept. 15 if not finished in class.

Tuesday: Today we will examine the difference between equity vs. equality and which one we value in Canada. We will then learn the four pillars of democracy (justice, equity, freedom, representation). Students should be done up to the end of page 4 in their student booklets. We will begin chapter 2 and learn about the 3 things all levels of government are responsible for (taxes, laws, services). We will also learn why regulations (laws) are important.
Thursday: We will review types of services and taxes collected by the government and then look at the 5 Parts of the Legal System. At this point, students should have the notes in their student booklet completely finished.

Tuesday: Students have not yet had a chance to fully examine what a regulation is, the types of services the government offers citizens, or the various taxes that are collected to pay for these services, so we will continue to look at these today. We will also review the 5 parts of Canada's Legal System. Now that our first unit is officially over, we will also play a review game.

Tuesday: We will begin Unit 2: Ancient Athens today with an Amazing Race twist! Students will be given a new student booklet which you can find below. This unit corresponds with chapter 3 in the textbook. Students will also be placed on teams and have to complete challenges and roadblocks, in between their pit stops of learning. An outline of the Amazing Race element of this unit can be found below.
